I immediately went vegan and I tried to learn all I could, but it was too late to stop the progression of Karen's cancer.
I went vegetarian forty years ago, but it took me twenty years to go the
rest of the way to vegan. For years I felt that veganism was too extreme,
that dairy products had some special nutrient, some amino acid or something
that I couldn't get from a diet of only vegetables. I had believed the
propaganda from the dairy industry.
My mother grew up on a small farm that had a few cows, so she drank milk all
through her childhood. Marilyn drank milk everyday of her life, even during
the last years when Meals-on-Wheels brought her meals which included pints
of this nasty toxin.
Milk didn't help her build strong bones. Mom developed advanced osteoporosis
at a young age. It got to the point where she didn't bother to call me
anymore to tell me she had broken a bone because it was happening all too
frequently.
My wife and I were vegetarians for our twelve years together. We included
dairy products in our meals. Karen drank a lot of milk and we both ate
cheese enchiladas topped with sour cream. We ate cheesy nachos, we ate ice
cream, we drank milkshakes and called them smoothies because we added a
banana. Dairy products were a substantial part of our diets.
When Karen was diagnosed with ovarian cancer I began to do a lot of research
online. I learned that studies had shown that an increased risk of hormonal
cancers such as prostate, breast and ovarian cancers was associated with
consumption of dairy products. I immediately went vegan and I tried to learn
all I could, but it was too late to stop the progression of Karen's cancer.
I went vegan twenty years ago. I wish I had known long ago what I know now.
I think that's what every vegan says, "I wish...long ago...I had known."
