Goldfinch and Chickadee – 29 July 2006

This swelteringly hot morning I saw a chickadee and a goldfinch in one of the tall evergreen trees in our front yard. Seeing these birds together resulted in my writing this little poem:

A Goldfinch and a Chickadee
(Written 29 July 2006)
By Mary T. Hoffman

A Goldfinch and a Chickadee,
A doubly welcome sight,
Landed in our tree
After their busy flight.

Though they seem unaware
Of the oppressive heat,
Their families need care –
Obligations to meet.

“Bird-brain” folks sneer,
Though wars they fight
While full of fear –
No end in sight.

But lessons we learn
From birds, we’ll find,
Will help us earn
Some peace of mind.

"Joyful Curmudgeon"
An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.
