A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Crabs Are Animals, Too – 22 September 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

The September 2006 issue of Animal People, News For People Who Care About Animals, contains an excellent editorial under the heading of “Crabs Are Animals Too” about “humane societies” that hold fundraisers featuring animals, such as crabs, boiled alive; or in the case of oysters, eaten alive.

One particular group mentioned in the article is the Prince Rupert, BC, SPCA that held a “crab feast” in 2005, and was advertising another for August 2006. Their poster featured “a grinning cartoon crab, pink as if already burned, sprawled beneath a beach umbrella” with the words “Live crab, cooked to eat at the park or cooked to take home.” There was also a photo of a real crab.

I was happy to read that this year, under pressure, this inhumane feast was cancelled.

It is difficult for me to understand how people whose days are spent helping certain selected species can turn a blind eye to the suffering of other species. How can they not make the connection?

As I’ve said before, if there is even the slightest chance of causing any pain, it is always better to err on the side of compassion.
