A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Diabetes - 2 December 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

The epidemic of diabetes is the topic that the latest Health Letter of the Public Citizen Health Research Group covers.

They are correct in their assessment of the pharmaceutical companies' need to "develop new illnesses that can be treated with a drug that is patent protected." One of these "new" illnesses is "pre-diabetes."

Also true is this statement from the Health Letter: "In order to keep investors happy, a company must grow the market, even if it means inventing a new disease to sell more drugs. Expanding the boundaries of an illness such as diabetes has been called "disease mongering," which was the subject of several recent articles in the Health Letter."  (I have also mentioned "disease mongering" in one of my previous Blogs.)

Rightly, they recommend lifestyle changes as the way to prevent type 2 diabetes. However, they do not spell out exactly what these changes should entail, other than listing "recommendations for living with diabetes" from the New York City Department of Health.

Everything that we have learned indicates that a low fat, whole food, vegan diet can prevent, reverse, or cure Type 2 diabetes.
