A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Childhood Obesity – 5 February 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of talk about “childhood obesity,” and how it leads to diabetes which in turn ushers in an assortment of illnesses – strokes, heart disease, cancer, etcetera, etcetera.

At the same time, for the most part, any suggested positive changes in diet and lifestyle to rectify this trend are undermined by the overwhelming deluge of commercials aimed at the very ones who are most at risk.

An example of such undermining may even be found in a local newspaper that features a children’s page. For years I’ve been noticing that the recipes offered on this page are almost always loaded with high fat animal products. For example, their children’s recipe for spaghetti contains the following artery-clogging ingredients: 1 pound ground turkey or beef, ½ pound cream cheese, 2 cups cottage cheese, ½ cup light sour cream, and ½ cup parmesan cheese.

This children’s page makes no attempt to educate their young readers about nutrition, or even the environment. It is fairly obvious who controls the purse strings here.
