A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Between a Rock and a Hard Place – 9 February 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

A TV commercial of a large producer of chicken products features a child who is obviously being “hyperactive.” This ad praises these products as providing the protein fueling this “energy” which actually appears more like “hyperactivity.”

When I see such commercials on TV, I think of the many schoolchildren who are given medications to quiet them down. Isn’t it strange that what is a “negative” behavior (the hyperactivity in the ad cited above) is touted as a “positive”?

I wonder how many children who are diagnosed as hyperactive are really suffering from disorders brought on by the over-processed foods they are fed, as well as their reactions to dairy products – lactose intolerance, for example. Yet there appears to be a reluctance to try a change in diet before prescribing meds which come with unpleasant side effects.

It’s as though these children are victims placed between the proverbial “rock” of a poor diet and the “hard place” of medications.
