A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Evolution – 18 February 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

Why is the word “evolution” so repugnant to many people? Among its meanings is “growth” or “change.” Isn’t growth or change for the better a good thing, and aren’t we supposed to grow and mature spritually?

If humans are so superior, why are they still eating the “lower” animals and destroying each other and God’s creation? Even after discovering that 99.4% of the critical DNA sites in the genes of bonobos are identical to their own – obviously, the Creator uses an economy of means – humans continue to utilize “lower” animals without remorse.

Humans must not use “scientific” inquiry as an excuse for behaving without compassion and making themselves “lesser beings” spiritually. God gave humans the ability to choose. Why do they choose to live on a lower level rather than rising to the level that God wants for them? Aren’t humans being a bit arrogant when they classify the “lower” animals as to evolutionary status when they themselves have not evolved enough to really follow the teachings of Jesus?

How superior to the “lower” animals are humans when they continue to kill each other around the world? Until humans can create universes and prevent tsunamis and hurricanes, they should try being a bit more humble and treat their fellow earthlings, both human and non-human, with compassion.

I can understand the frustration of the few “crying in the wilderness” (Isaiah 40:3)* through the millennia – those who catch a glimpse of the Lord’s Truth and who see how often “religion” twists that Truth.

Perhaps it is humans who need to “evolve.”

* Isaiah 40:3

3 The voice of one crying in the wilderness:
"Prepare the way of the LORD;
Make straight in the desert
A highway for our God.
