A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Celebrating the Birth of the Prince of Peace while Worshiping the Prince of Death – 23 December 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

If you have read Frank’s sermon for today, you’ll recognize the title of this Blog. If not, please visit: (You may even want to read it again.)

This sermon, which I think is one of the best I’ve ever heard or read, comes right to the point and “tells it the way it is.” This is something that very few pastors/religious leaders do, since they are afraid to “make waves.” Their fear (the opposite of love, according to the Bible) keeps them from emulating the Prince of Peace who was not afraid to take on the corrupt leaders of His day.

Frank’s opening remarks of his sermon for the Compassion Internet Church Ministry are as follows:

“Celebrating the birth of the Prince of Peace while worshiping the prince of death may seem like a strange title for a Christmas-time sermon, but it really reflects the way that the vast majority of professing and celebrating Christians live.”

“Let's begin our spiritual excursion by setting aside all our society's traditional ways of celebrating Christmas, and look at the true message we are taught from the Bible and compare it with the ways that Christmas is really celebrated.”
