A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Today’s Thought – 31 December 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

“Everything is good as it leaves the hands of the Author of things; everything degenerates in the hands of man.”

“Nature never deceives us; it is always we who deceive ourselves.”

– Jean-Jacques Rousseau (28 June 1712 - 2 July 1778),
Swiss-born French philosopher and author

These two quotations of Jean-Jacques Rousseau remind me of two scriptures: Genesis 8:21, where God says “…the intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth,” and Job 12:7-10:

7 “Ask the animals, and they will teach you. Ask the birds of the sky, and they will tell you.

8 Speak to the earth, and it will instruct you. Let the fish of the sea speak to you.

9 They all know that the Lord has done this.

10 For the life of every living thing is in his hand, and the breath of all humanity.”
