A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Dominion – 24 February 2009
By Mary T. Hoffman

Have you noticed how some folks like to throw around the “D” word – “dominion” – in their attempt to justify their hardness-of-heart toward nonhuman animals? They think that by citing that one word from Genesis 1:26 of the Bible they can shut up any of those “bleeding hearts” who care about God’s creatures who cannot speak for themselves. And of course, they don’t want to admit that “dominion” does not mean abusive dominance, but caring stewardship. We are to be caring custodians of God’s creation.

Genesis 1:26

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” ~ New King James Version

I wonder if they ever bother to read and understand any other words of the Bible. Obviously, they ignore Genesis 29 where God clearly instructs humans about their diet:

Genesis 1:29

29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food.” ~ New King James Version

Those who are hard-of-heart choose to live in God’s concessions that took place after the fall, which allowed the eating of animals but came with a curse that is obvious when you look at all the diseases associated with eating animals’ flesh and bodily secretions.

Genesis 6:5-6

5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

6 And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. ~ New King James Version

They also ignore Revelation 21:4 which proves that there will be no exploitation of humans or animals in Heaven –

Revelation 21:4

4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away." ~ New King James Version
