NOTE from All-Creatures: Though posted and promoted as 'great news for animals in labs' by many animal protection organizations, here is the point of view from a long-time antivisection activist.

The law also doesn't stop the use of animals, it only makes alternatives allowable. A search for "laboratory animal supply companies" gets 58,000,000 hits. At least some of these will want to stay in business.

Prior to this, the drug companies could say that animal-based testing was required. Now they can't.

It’s hard to predict what happens going forward. If the non-animal tests are cheaper, you'd think the drug companies would embrace the cost-savings.

But then, I don't know how invested in the use of animals they are. A search for "laboratory animal supply companies" gets 58,000,000 hits. At least some of these will want to stay in business.

Also, the law won't affect the use of animals in research... the 100 or so million mice used every year will seemingly keep being used.
