Letter from Ruth about Spiritual and Vegan Roots - 13 Sep 2005

I read your page on spiritual and vegan roots. Your broad spiritual perspective on vegan/vegetarianism is good. I would like to draw your attention to another spiritual resource that has many references to non meat eating including the abstinence of all animal products. And that is OAHSPE, A Kosmon Bible, published 1882.

Below are couple of relevant passages:

"Behold the seventh Era is at hand, Your Creator commands your change from a carnivorous man of contention, to an herbivorous man of peace. The four head of the Beast shall be put away (false religion); and war shall be no more on the earth. Your armies will be disbanded and from this time forth, whoever desires not to war, you shall not impress; for it is the commandment of your Creator."

The are the words of Great Spirit "When I command the nations of the earth to peace, behold I raise my hand above the arnivorant's head. As there was a time when I created every animal perfect in its order; so also shall such a time come to man. And now is the dawn of it."

"And I said to man: Be observant of what you shall eat and drink, and where you shall dwell by day, and sleep by night. For all things shall write upon your soul the character and kind of which they are made.

If you aspire be gentle, like a lamb, and non resistant and docile, so you may obtain great knowledge, feed upon herbs and fruits and cereals. And your blood shall be pure and cool and charged with food for your spirit, in peace and love.

But if you aspire to be ferocious, like a carnivorous beast, then you shall feed upon flesh and fish, and your blood shall be hot, and your spirit shall be stirred with passion and anger and contention and tattling and war and jealousy and love of vengeance. For whatever you charge you blood with, shall be charged upon your spirit.

Because you cannot feed on fish nor flesh but through destruction to death, even so, destruction to death shall come upon your soul. From your own blood shall your spirit be inspired, even according to what your blood contains. As through corpor your corporeal part is nurtured, so through the gaseous, atmospherean part is your spirit nurtured.

Like unto like created I all the living. Whoever makes themselves carnivorous, can not escape conflict and contention within his own members, soul and body.

Until the earth was circumscribed, I gave man carnivorous food; today, I make it poison to him. And man shall turn away from it; and the smell of it shall sicken him; and the sight of blood shall fill him with horror. The butcher shall be ashamed of his avocation; his neighbors shall say to him: You stink of blood! Because you gave us flesh , we also drank to drunkenness. Because you gave us flesh, we also smoked and took narcotics. Because you gave us flesh, we are rotten with cararrh and wasted in the lungs. Because we feasted on flesh, Great Spirit answered us in corruptible flesh. Lo, we stink from the sole of our feet to the crown of our heads."

Dear Ruth:

Thank you very much for your encouraging comments and for the quotes and information. We have found that true peacemakers always have a common frame of reference, no matter what their culture or religious beliefs may be.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
