Letter from Andrea Kennedy about Our Web Site and Factory Farming 23 Sep 2005

Hello Frank and Mary

I just discovered your website today. You have obviously put a lot of love, compassion and enthusiasm into the site and it reflects your commitment to animals.

The photos of battery chickens were horrendous - but important to show. In Australia there is growing awareness of the cruelty of battery cages and mass production, but unfortunately battery systems are still legal.

Fortunately more consumers are voting with their dollar and choosing kinder egg production. I have noticed so many free range and barn laid options on the supermarket shelves.

I am doing a Masters degree on this phenomon in Australia. I want to analyse the value chain (from producer to retailer and consumer) and the inclusion of animal welfare in "food integrity" and "quality assurance". I want to find out how much information is provided to consumers, and look out for any misleading information (eg. pictures of happy hens for battery eggs). I want to find out whether consumer signals are reaching the industry and really causing change.

It's awareness that starts this momentum - that's why websites such as yours are so important. Keep up the good work!

Dear Andrea:

Thank you very much for your kind and encouraging words.

In the United States, much of the free range is an advertising gimmick, with very little compassion for the animals, though the cages are eliminated. The birds see very little of the outdoors and still live in crowded conditions.

And, even in Australia, they are still sent to the same torturous slaughterhouses, and all the male chicks are still killed.

There really is no such thing as "food integrity" or "quality assurance" when it comes to commercially farming animals. The dollar still drives the economy of animal food production.

We agree that this is a "start" in the right direction. It may be causing less pain and suffering, but it is not eliminating it.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
