LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Mothers Day
Wednesday, 9 May 2007
Posted By Jenny Moxham
This Sunday is Mothers Day ... but for many mothers it will be far from happy.
Pig mothers will certainly not be 'going out' ... on this or any other day! The majority of Australian breeding sows are barely able to move in their body-hugging steel and concrete pens. They will most likely spend the day chewing the metal bars of their stalls, trying to clamber out and pawing the floor. Many sows literally 'go mad'.
And 'broiler' hen mothers definitely won't be the recipients of tasty treats. They'll be lucky if they even get food! To prevent these selectively bred, oversized hens from becoming cripples or succumbing to heart attacks before 'giving' the farmer a profitable number of eggs, they are kept in a state of chronic hunger.
And there'll be no 'family time' for dairy cow mothers. More than likely they'll still be fretting over the loss of their newest calf, snatched away for slaughter within days of birth. Each year in Australia one million of these tiny 'bobby calves' are killed by the industry. Dairy cow mothers also suffer from mastitis and lameness from being forced to produce 10 times more milk than nature intended.
Surely the time has come for the human mothers of the world to take a stand against this heartless and cruel exploitation of their non-human counterparts by refusing to support these inhumane industries with their consumer dollars.

Dear Jenny:
A really great letter. You and Mary are thinking alike for this Mother's Day, which will be reflected in today's and tomorrow's blogs.
In the Love of the Lord,
Frank and Mary
