Letter to the Editor by Jenny Moxham: Fishing is Cruel - 12 Jun 2007

Ranges Trader Mail. 12 June 2007

Fishing is cruel.

What would your reaction be if you read in the paper that someone had hidden a barbed hook in a piece of meat and then yanked the unsuspecting canine victim aloft at the end of a pole, before slowly suffocating him? I'm sure you'd consider the perpetrator of this act a cruel monster. Why then, do so many, including our shire councilors, fail to see that treating other equally sensitive animals this way is equally cruel?

I have just picked up my copy of Shirewide and notice that a 'family fishing day' is being promoted by the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The caption below a picture of children being taught to fish is, "Family fun: fishing is catching on" .

If it would be considered cruel to hook and asphyxiate a dog, why should it be considered fun to hook and asphyxiate a fish? The renowned philosopher and physician Albert Schweitzer said, 'The thinking person must oppose all cruel customs no matter how deeply rooted in tradition and surrounded by a halo. When we have a choice, we must avoid bringing torment and injury into the life of another.' He also said, The time is coming when people will be amazed that the human race existed so long before it recognized that thoughtless injury to life is incompatible with real ethics.
