Letter from Vonda Smesny about Rescuing Animals - 20 Jun 2007
To Whom It May Concern:
On June 18, 2007 I found an injured dog lying half way in a ditch of water. After giving the animal some food and water I removed him from the ditch and took him to my home. The dog was unable to use his back legs. Either his back or both of his legs were broke. I called my local vet and ask for the phone number to a local organization that would come pick up the dog. I was given the number to the Harris County Rabies Control. I called this organization around 12:00 noon and was informed that they would pick up the dog the next day. I waited the following day for their arrival and called them back several times. I was told that they would pick up the dog that evening. I called at least 6 times and was told that the dog would be picked up. On June 19 I couldn't bare to see the dog suffer any longer. I then called Channel 13 with the hope of getting some kind of help. I was given the number to the SPCA hotline in Harris County and the dog was picked up an hour later.
I am so angry with Harris County Rabies Control. I'm not sure what to do. Do you have any suggestions. I thought about writing the County Commissioner, but I'm not sure where to start.
That dog suffered over 30 hours. I want to know why Harris County never showed up. Or if they weren't going to make it why didn't they let us know and I could have taken him to the vet. Please let me know who to write to express my concern for helpless animals and anger with the system.

Thank you for writing, and for telling us about this tragedy. We have heard many similar stories about municipal animal agencies. As a result, we never refer people to them. We only refer people to animal rescue organizations. This is something to keep in mind if you ever have the opportunity to help another animal.
In the Love of the Lord,
Frank and Mary
