Letter from Will Barry about the Bible and Eating Animals - 11 Jan 2008

I was reading the article on Animals Betrayed and I agree that the mass slaughter of animals is a part of our surrounding culture. I myself, as a born again believer, have decreased my consumption of animal products and increased my consumption of plant products (There are a lot of health benefits in this also).

But tell me, do you consider it a sin to eat animal products being that even Jesus fed the people fish? And I see that plants were God's first provision as in Gen 1:29; but what about the second provision after the flood in Gen 9:3 where God gave us all that moves plus the plants?

Dear Will:

Thank you for writing and for your question.

When God granted the concession for humans to eat flesh, it removed the sin aspect, but not the curse, which is reflected in the health problems you mentioned. However, the cruelty involved in the production of animal flesh and bodily secretions is a sin, and all who participate in the production and consuming of the products of cruelty also take upon themselves those sinful acts and are responsible for them.

We hope this answers you question.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
