Letter from Jaclyn about Animal Abuse and Her Companions, Rhode - 19 Jul 2008

I always found the stuff on your website so sad. I just don't know how people could do that to poor, innocent animals!! But, I was just looking at the Mice and Rats section, and I was even sadder. Because I just got a new pet hamster, and he is my only pet (other that 3 goldfish, but those are more of my dads).

I love my baby, Rhode William Kempton (my hamster), with all of my heart, and Mice & Rats are related to hamsters. I was on the bridge of crying, and I cried the first time that I found this website. I try to drink as little milk as possible now, and eat as little meat as possible. I don't understand how 'you can be a vegetarian and still eat fish'. It's the same as eating chicken or beef! You're killing an innocent animal, taking it's meat, cooking it, then eating it. My mom says that I'm already a vegan, because I only eat chicken and "chicken is poultry so it doesn't count". That's the same as saying "Beef is livestock so it doesn't count". It's a lie.

I am so happy that Oprah made an episode on Puppy Mills, because she informed billions of people what really happens. Before that, I always pictures a puppy mill as a big wind mill, with puppies on leases, walking in circles to power it. I never really knew what they were until then.

I think that it started when I was only 5 or 6, though, because that's the day that I asked my parents, "Mom, Dad, what's a slaughter house?" They told me, and I broke down crying. So when I stumbled across your website, I was happy that I wasn't alone. I was happy that you could inform people of what a terrible, cruel, inhumane world we live in. Why are humans so cruel? Why do we think that we can pick on animals, because they are smaller than us? They're not even all smaller than us! There's elephant abuse, and we're definitely not bigger than elephants (I hope that nobody is, anyways!).

But your site says: Don't wear or use animal products (fur, fur trim, leather, skins, wool, silk). What's silk made of? I didn't know that that indorsed animal abuse.. Uh-oh, my nanny bought me a '100% Egyptian Silk' Sewing basket...But I can't give it back to her...I don't usually buy silk things anyways. My mom bought a leather purse last year, and it's falling apart now. I will NOT let her get a REAL leather one. And the thought that we kill animals for vain reasons makes me sick. I just, I, I don't even know where to start.

The worst part is that it happens all over the world, not just in one place. It's sort of like a forest fire. If it's just in one place, you can stomp it out. But if it spreads, it destroys part of our world. It HAS to stop.

My...kid in my class, Nick, is a complete idiot. He said "But I like Puppy Mills!" He thought that they were dog breeders, he is stupid. I...I...I typed a lot.. I'm only ELEVEN years old. I have to say, I'm a smart 11 year old, and I'm extremely mature, but I have to tell people how wrong this is.

I have an account on youtube, if you want to check it out. It's called Phyllis3012. Without the period. I have a video about puppy mills, one about adopting dogs, and one about my new hamster, Rhode. :)

So, thanks for taking the time to read this email, and if you emailed me back, I'd be amazed. But I'm not making you, Thanks.

-Jaclyn

PS: Rhode (My hamster) thanks you for informing people about the cruelty to his rodent relatives, and he also says hi. He wants me to send you a picture of him, so that's him in the picture!

Reply from Frank and Mary Hoffman

Dear Jaclyn:

Thank you very much for writing and for telling us about yourself and Rhode.

We agree, people who eat fish are not vegetarians.

People are so cruel because they believe they can get away with it, because most of the people in this world go along with all the cruelty and don't speak out against it.

The future of this world rests in the compassionate hearts and souls of young people like you.

We look forward to hearing from you again, and please give Rhode a love tickle from us.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
