BAZ Blakeney’s article, ‘‘Pets that pass the taste test’’ (Opinion, December 28), clearly demonstrates the ridiculous double standards most people have regarding their treatment — and mistreatment — of animals.
They keep ‘‘pet’’ fish, but eat fish.
They keep ‘‘pet’’ birds, yet eat birds.
Pigs are as intelligent and as capable of suffering as dogs, yet most people eat pigs and pamper dogs. Isn’t this totally inconsistent?
Unless we treat all animals with equal consideration and compassion, we can’t call ourselves animal lovers.
