Letter from Jenny Moxham about Ritual Sacrifice - 25 Oct 2012
Barbaric ritual
One thing not mentioned in the news item regarding the Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca (‘‘Human sea’’, October, 23) was the fact that Friday’s Festival of Sacrifice entails the cruel slaughtering of over 100 million peaceful camels, sheep, goats and cows.
A camel typically has one of his front legs tied up and his rear legs roped together so he can hardly stand. Surrounded by onlookers he is held down with ropes while someone plunges a knife into his throat. Braying and thrashing in pain, he slowly bleeds to death.
Frequently sacrificial animals are killed in full view of one another in streets awash with blood.
This barbaric and brutal tradition deserves to be relegated to the ignorant, dark ages and should be condemned by all civilised people.
