I rescued a chicken in Crown Heights this weekend! She was just walking
around on the sidewalk and, when I called to her, she came right up to me
like a puppy. I named her Ellie.
She's going to a small sanctuary run by two of the frequent volunteers at Woodstock, maybe in a few days or a week or so, when someone with a car is able to come for her.
For now, I feel so lucky to have this sweet little girl in my home with me.
A man on the street told me that she'd been walking around without anything to eat or drink for a few days and within 30 minutes of getting her into my apartment, she fell into a really deep sleep.
What an ordeal she must have been through. The closest live poultry mart that I know of is more than a mile away from where I found her.
Luckily, she's safe and loved now; she's been eating a lot and I gave her a bath and blow dry today.

UPC to Lori: May we tell the world?
Lori's response: Sure, you can post that on the UPC Web site! I'll let Ellie the chicken know that she's an Internet star! I could go on and on about how much I've fallen in love with her and what a delight she is to have around . . . but I'll save that for another time.
