But in all honesty, Ashley was not the sweet, loving kitty of my dreams. Perhaps it was a lesson in not falling for one’s looks... She wanted nothing to do with any human, including me... May you never have to be touched by a human again Miss Ashley... I think that’s the perfect heaven for you.

Cat Ashley

Ashley came to live at the SHAC house where I lived in 2000. Her young human mom had been arrested at a protest and we did our due diligence as the support team in taking care of her in the girl’s absence. During kitty’s short stay, it became very clear that she was being severely neglected and we decided that Ashley would not go back to Utah with the young lady upon her release.

When none of the other SHAC folk were willing to take responsibility for her, she left with me on my departure. And with me, she has been for 19 years.

Cat Ashley

When I was young, I dreamt of having a kitty that looked exactly like Ashley: long beige hair with gray points and brilliant blue eyes. But she was even prettier than I ever imagined... with a cutie crooked tail and the most adorable face ever.

But in all honesty, Ashley was not the sweet, loving kitty of my dreams. Perhaps it was a lesson in not falling for one’s looks... She wanted nothing to do with any human, including me.

In fact, the one and only time she ever had to go to the vet (other than routine check ups, up until 6 months or so ago), her only symptom was she was being sweet. Literally. I only knew something was wrong because she cuddled up to me a few nights in a row. And that just wasn’t who Ashley was. Surely enough, she was sick. Mama always knows.

She was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year and the vet didn’t expect her to live longer than 2 months, possibly even weeks. But she rallied. Like she does. Until a few days ago... She finally started crashing and I knew it was time to release her from this life. I’ve spoiled her with lots of extra yummy gourmet food, tuna, and baby food and she has savored every bite. But she was ready to go.

Cat Ashley

We’ve been through a lot together and though she could care less about me, I will miss her sassy little spirit. May you never have to be touched by a human again Miss Ashley... I think that’s the perfect heaven for you.

Rest In Peace my friend.
