Today is a very special day as we wish our exuberant girl, Courtney, a very Happy 18th Birthday! Courtney was a "surprise baby" born here at IPPL to mother Michelle, who never showed signs of being pregnant, and father Maui, who had (supposedly) been vasectomized.

Needless to say it was a shock to the staff when they came to work and found Michelle holding a newborn baby! Sadly, at only 12 days old, Courtney had to be separated from her parents after Michelle rejected and attacked her, leaving her with a severely injured leg that had to be surgically fixed by our veterinarian, Dr. Ohlandt. After thorough observations by the staff, it was determined that Michelle had attacked Courtney because she was having difficulty producing enough milk and Courtney's attempts to suckle were probably causing her pain, which meant that the staff now had a baby gibbon to care for.

Courtney was hand-raised by IPPL staff and volunteers for six years until she was finally old enough to get an enclosure of her own outside with the rest of our resident gibbons.

Gibbon Courtney

In May 2009, Courtney was paired with a former lab gibbon named Whoop-Whoop. His mild-mannered personality is a great match for her wild ways! Courtney is definitely a girl who keeps the staff on their toes and entertains us with her crazy antics and loud personality. One of her favorite things to do is swing on the trapeze bar inside her enclosure. She's gotten so good at it that she'll swing pretty high, launch herself off the bar, fly through the enclosure and land on the bars right in front of an unsuspecting staff member.

She also loves playing tag, demanding that we drop whatever we're doing in the yard and run all around her enclosure with her, though Courtney cheats and runs across the middle of the enclosure so we're always the one who's "it". Obviously, with today being her birthday, we will make sure she gets all the special, one-on-one attention and playtime that she wants!
