Lia Wilbourn discusses the successful vegan outreach and publicity achieved by activists at the Marin County Fourth of July celebration and reminds us that the suffering imposed by the meat, dairy, and egg industries is egregious and unnecessary.

In Defense of Animals, with support from the San Francisco Vegan Society, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, and other local animal advocates, brought a message of animal liberation to the Marin County Fourth of July celebration. The action built on a growing movement of global demonstrations to denounce all animal farming and exploitation.
At the Fourth of July Parade in Larkspur and Corte Madera, California, 15 miles north of San Francisco, activists marched peacefully before thousands of spectators, amplifying the message that all animals deserve the right to their own bodies, babies, and lives. Using dairy as an entry point, as many people still view the industry as wholesome, activists distributed educational handouts on humanewashing and carried signs emphasizing veganism as the only truly humane choice.

The action also clarified the vegan message: respecting animals means not using them for anything. Whenever anyone is being used for someone else’s gain, suffering is inevitable.

When Congressman Jared Huffman appeared in the parade, Lia Wilbourn, Farmed Animals Campaign Specialist with In Defense of Animals, asked him if he agrees that all animals deserve to be respected and that farmed animals suffer in all farms and slaughterhouses. He said, "I know." When urged to recognize the inherent cruelty of all animal farming and respect all animals, Huffman declined to comment.
Most politicians and the public already agree that factory farms are inhumane. Yet society has also been conditioned to believe that, as long as we treat animals better, it’s still okay to use and kill them.
Whether “small family farms” or factory farms, none of them are humane. All the animals are considered property for profit and sent to the same slaughterhouses, most as infants, for unnecessary products we’re better off without.
Leading nutrition organizations agree that a balanced plant-based diet meets all nutritional needs and can help reduce the risk of major human diseases. Anyone who has access to a grocery store, or just a variety of plant foods, has access to being vegan.
Mother cows carry their babies for nine months, only to have their calves taken away within hours or days of birth, causing trauma and anguish to both. The milk they made for their babies is stolen for human taste buds and profit. Female calves endure agonizing “disbudding,” their horn buds burned off without painkillers. Then they are forcibly impregnated as young as one year old. Male calves are deemed worthless because they don’t produce milk and are most often slaughtered; some small farms shoot them.
In May, the inaugural International Calf & Cow Mothers' Day brought together In Defense of Animals, Los Angeles Animal Save, Plant Based Treaty, Animal Alliance Network, Climate Healers, and UnchainedTV on Hollywood Boulevard to speak up for mother cows and their male babies who are tormented and killed by the dairy industry.
In the egg industry, male baby chicks are killed because they don’t produce eggs; their mothers are slaughtered too. Across all animal farming, pigs, chickens, turkeys, goats, cows, and sheep endure lives of misery, fear, grief, family separation, confinement, mutilations, and the terror of slaughter, where many remain conscious during slaughter. Aquatic animals suffer too when they’re killed in the fishing industry. Each is an individual capable of experiencing joy, curiosity, play, forming bonds, and valuing their lives.
Most people care about animals and would never hurt one themselves. Vegan advocacy is about helping people align their own values of respect, empathy, and fairness with their actions. Animals are not resources, commodities, or slaves for us. They are here with us.
Every activist at these events was once reached by someone willing to speak up. Being vegan is the least that we can do. Farmed animals especially need us to speak up for them, as we would want someone to speak up for us if we were in their place.
If not you, who? If not now, when?
