The C. Of E. Newspaper’s Spiritual Director Is Yoked To a Huntsman
Yes, while to the opposite extreme of Christian and theological
interpretation we have those expounding The Word with strong
evangelical zeal while, as a side distraction, they indulge in the
vilest of blood sports. To quote but one example, the husband of the
Lecturer On prayer And Spirituality at a top Oxford college I was once
honoured to pass through for ordination in to the Church Of England is
but one such person; and there must be countless like him! Yes, I’ve
rubbed shoulders with them: “Brother Thompson”, they say, “Why do you
involve yourself with animal cruelty? They are on this earth to be
eaten! Don’t get side tracked from the gospel. Simply preach Jesus!”
Yes, and when I identify Jesus character with that of a good
shepherd prepared to forfeiit life in order to rescue one wayward
sheep, they just look nonplussed. They just cannot see the
connection.. Well all I can say is: ‘Heaven help them on judgment
day!’ Yes, in true charismatic and evangelical zeal they might well
say: “Did we not cast out demons in your name, and eat and drink in
your presence?” And He will reply: “Depart from me because I knew you
not!”
Ah but that is not all! Jesus may well say to the likes
of an assortment of dishevelled looking animal rights activists:
“Come, Ye blessed of The Lord!” and they will say “But who are you
Lord because we never knew you?” And He with a gracious smile of
welcome will say: “What you did for even the least of my creatures,
you have done as for mer Then welcome in to my Kingdom.” Yes, indeed,
there will be much weeping and gnashing of teeth at the coming Day of
Judgment, and it could be nearer then we care to: think. (See Matthew
25, verses 31 to 46: which is a parable based on a past herdsman
separating goats from sheep which have infiltrated his own flock!)
One thing I do know is that the selfless kind of life style that
the average dedicated New Ager lives by is often enough to put the
life style of the average Christian very much in the shade. The fact
is that far too many church goers of both extremes are so concerned
about seeking ease from a guilty conscience, plus an urgent desire to
seek a niche for themselves in Heaven- that their concerns, outside
that of their own family circle, is more often than not, that of a
bare minimum.
