The fifth annual Spay Day USA will take place Tuesday,
February 23, 1999.
Spay Day USA is a national campaign to save the lives of millions of
dogs and
cats.
Last year's Spay Day once again set a new record in the
number of animals
that were spayed or neutered. More than 108,000 dogs and cats were
spayed
or neutered by shelters across the country, preventing millions of
unwanted
future births.
Between 14 and 17 million dogs and cats are euthanized
every year simply
because they were born in a country which does not have enough good
homes
for each of them. Another 10 million stray and abandoned companion
animals
die on our streets and in rural communities suffering from abuse and
neglect.
Spay Day USA has been designated as a time to encourage everyone to take
one dog or cat to a veterinarian to have the animal spayed or neutered.
If your own dog or cat is already spayed or neutered,
sponsor a friend or
relative's pet. People are often unaware of the impact of a single
un-neutered
animal. Statistics show that an unaltered cat and her unaltered
offspring can
produce 420,000 cats in seven years while one unaltered dog and her
offspring
can produce 67,000 dogs in six years.
Spaying and neutering are the only ways to effectively
end the companion
animal population crisis and stop the suffering of innocent animals.
