With the passing of the annual Meatout on March 20th, we
at ARO have
received numerous reports about reaction from meat eaters to vegetarians
and
vegans using the day to educate. Often veg*ans were met with scorn or
ridiculed by those who feel a need to defend their choice of eating
meat, even
to the point of grisly tales of what they will do to animals in the name
of
vegetarianism. The following is a response that one of our staff
members,
[email protected], gave for
such a situation:
"Your insensitivity to the suffering of animals is an
unfortunate flaw in your
character. Perhaps you would have less anger and guilt if you ate a more
compassionate diet. Sometimes people tell me 'you have a right to eat
veggies and I have a right to eat meat'. Please remember that your
rights
end when they interfere with my rights. I have a right not to pay taxes
to
support the billions of federal dollars spent each year on meat related
diseases. I have a right to protect the millions of wildlife animals
that belong
to all the U.S. citizens that are killed each year because they are a
threat to
the cattle industry. I have a right to demand saving the world's
rainforests
that are being cleared to make room for cattle. I have a right to clean
air
and water which are being polluted by the livestock industry. I have the
right
to ask you to stop violating my rights."
