"Characteristics such as intelligence, awareness, and
altruism exist on
a continuum, with some animals having more of these characteristics than
some humans. There is no morally relevant characteristic that separates
all human beings from all non-humans. Indeed, the continual search for a
unique trait led psychologist Paul Chance to conclude that the only
thing
different about humans is that we are "the only creature on Earth that
tries
to prove that it is different from, and preferably superior to, other
species."
