About The Prayer Alliance for Animals
The Prayer Alliance for Animals was started in April
1999. It is designed to bring together people who believe in the power
of prayer and who want to help animals using that enormous power. Almost
all of the important movements through the years have had backing from
one organized religion or another. The civil rights movement had the
Rev. Martin Luther King, the pro-life movement has Pope John Paul II.
With the possible exception of St. Francis, the animal rights movement
has not tapped into the enormous power of prayer. I believe that
intercession through prayer will help our movement to gain momentum and
propel us into the next millennium. A prayer chain is simple. Like a
phone tree, it will grow by leaps and bounds. Your only obligation,
should you decide to join, is to promise to dedicate a few minutes each
week in prayer and/or meditation, in your own way and to whomever you
pray, for animals in danger. I will send you weekly e-mails to tell you
what issue is on the agenda for that week. Some of the issues that we
have prayed for in the past weeks are: The gray whales, the wolf
restoration project in Yellowstone, Laboratory Animals, the passage of
bills to ban cat/dog fur trade and steel-jaw leghold traps, the animals
injured in wildfires, marine mammals and seabirds, and many more.
A simple, popular prayer that can be used in all
petitions is The Prayer for Animals :
A Prayer for Animals
By
Albert Schweitzer
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for
our friends the animals, especially for
animals who are suffering; for any that
are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened
or hungry; for all that must be put to death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them we ask a
heart of compassion and gentle hands and
kindly words. Make us, ourselves, to be
true friends to animals and so to share
the blessings of the merciful.
Although I am an animal-rights activist, this prayer
alliance will not reflect only animal rights ideals. The whole purpose
of an alliance is to bring us all together. Those who are animal-welfare
or animal-control minded are most welcome to participate and suggest
prayer issues. The most important thing to remember is this: It isn't
about loving animals, animals are not always lovable, are they? It's
about respecting animals.
For the animals,
