Just had to drop a note and thank you for the great
article in the ARO on Road Kills. I thought also that you might want to
add that for a few dollars, you can really actively save some lives.
All
our vehicles are equipped with the "Deer Whistlers". You know, the twin
silver thingies you see in the stores now... I have had them for almost
15 years...paid the big bucks for the original SAVALIFE DEER ALERTS from
the NJ Company...and THEY WORK...I will dig up the research papers they
sent me, and they are amazing.
I had the horrendous experience of
hitting a deer and I still have nightmares over it. I was going 70 in a
small car, and she ALMOST cleared the two lane freeway... well not
quite...she died instantly and the Ky HP officer was very very sweet,
but I was absolutely grief stricken. Well I have SEEN the whistlers work
(the cheap ones work just as well..it is the SHAPE and the sound they
produce. They typically work above 35 mph, and cause the sound (which
you cannot hear in the car) to be projected so that whoever is thinking
about crossing the road will pause...we were driving through the Grand
Canyon and all of a sudden a huge Elk stopped before stepping out and
turned and faced us... and STEPPED BACK!! Not to mention the everyday
road encounters I have because I live on a farm in the country and work
on a night shift...
And THANKS for the mention on deer always being in
pairs...a few years ago, a doe was crossing the road with a baby...and
we stayed put to see the twin following behind the first...it was a very
psychic experience..my husband and I just KNEW that somebody else was
there..
