On October 18, 1999 the Redmond, Washington City Council
banned exotic animal acts and did it unanimously with a vote of 7-0
despite a last minute letter writing push from anti-animal groups
nationally. There was even discussion among the city council of possibly
including rodeos in future legislation. This is a big victory in the
northwest as Seattle will in the next three months be voting on an
exotic animal circus ban with the Mayor of Seattle Paul Schell being in
full support of it.
If passed, Seattle would become the first major American
metropolitan city to have such an ordinance against animal circuses. A
local group called Citizens for Cruelty Free Entertainment has been
working on the issue in various cities throughout the Seattle area.
Redmond, perhaps best known as the home of Microsoft is the first city
to pass a ban locally.
