Please take some time over the next few weeks to help a child form values about treating animals with kindness and respect by helping him or her participate in the Fund for Animals Short Essay Contest. The contest is suitable for children in grades 4-12.

To honor the millennial year, which has been declared "2000: Year of the Humane Child," The Fund for Animals invites students to submit essays reflecting the theme of "our responsibility to treat nonhuman animals with kindness and respect." Entries should respond to one of the following questions:

* Is sport hunting a form of cruelty to animals?
* Why do we love animals called "pets" and hunt animals called "game"?

Entries will be considered for a first prize of a $100 U.S. savings bond and a second prize of a $50 U.S. savings bond in each of the following categories:

* Grades 4-5 (100 words or less)
* Grades 6-8 (250 words or less)
* Grades 9-12 (500 words or less)
