Pet Peeves: The Joy of Baking Soda

*After cleaning up a pet stain, liberally sprinkle with baking soda and let set overnight before vacuuming. Odors will disappear (CAUTION: while sprinkling baking soda on a wet area can be an effective cleaner and deodorizer on carpet or upholstery, not all fabrics are color fast. Always test a small, hidden area first.)

*Clean pet urine on carpets by making a paste of water and baking soda. Put over stain and let set until dry. Then vacuum.

*Wash the insides of animals ears with a solution of warm water and baking soda to eliminate itching and ear mites.

*Soak and squeeze a sponge in a warm water and baking soda solution. Rub the sponge gently over your cats coat to remove loose hairs, thus preventing hair balls.

*Before adding litter to any freshly started cat box, sprinkle a layer of baking soda first.

*Scrub dog collars with a solution of baking soda dissolved in hot water to remove grease and grime. Or soak nylon collars in a solution of equal parts baking soda and vinegar in hot water. The collar will soak clean in 15 minutes to a half hour. Rinse and hang to dry.

*Sprinkle a small amount of baking soda on your dog and brush out to remove doggy odor.

*Add 2 tbs. baking soda to your dogs bath water and to the rinse water for a soft and shiny coat.

*If your white dog gets dirty, clean it with baking soda sprinkled right on the coat. Brush out the dirt.

*Should your dog run into a skunk and get sprayed. Bathe him in a tub of water to which you add 1 box baking soda, the juice of 2 lemons and a squeeze of your shampoo.

*Add 1/2 cup baking soda to wash water when washing pet blankets to help clean and deodorize.

*Brush dogs teeth with a solution of baking soda and water with a toothbrush -- if they will let you. It will certainly clean and freshen their breath. (NOTE: Not all vets feel baking soda is a good toothpaste for dogs and cats because of its sodium content.)

*While housebreaking puppies, use baking soda on the urine spots to make sure the odor is gone or they'll want to reuse the same spot again.

*Give stuffed or furry toys a dry shower by sprinkling on baking soda and allowing them to sit for 15 minute before brushing off.

*Ease, and cool a dog's skin eruptions with soaking in water to which you've added baking soda.

*Freshen your dogs bedding by sprinkling BS and letting it set for at least 15 minutes before vacuuming it up.

*Soak plastic bird feeders in a solution of hot water and BS to avoid cleaning solution odor.

*Keep horses legs clean by washing them with a solution of BS and water.

*Deodorize bird, guinea pig, and rabbit cages by sprinkling BS underneath their newspaper liner. Its harmless to your pets.

OTHER USES

*Sprinkle the bottom tray of your toaster oven with a tsp. of BS to eliminate the burnt smell from drippings and crumbs.

*BS in the bath can bring relief from the burning sensation and skin inflammation that accompany urinary infections.

*For sore throat -- mix equal parts BS, brown sugar and salt in a glass of warm water and gargle.

*Sprinkle BS very lightly on and inside a cast to eliminate odor. Blow it "in" using a hair dryer.

*Pour some BS into your garden hose, replace the nozzle and turn on water. Then spray to wash the grime off white aluminum siding.

*Remove ballpoint pen stains from leather clothing by -- laying item flat and spread BS on the stain. Leave it on until the ink is absorbed. Brush off. Repeat if necessary.

*Combine BS with just enough vinegar to create a bubbling paste and use it to scrub out toilet bowl stains with a brush.

*Use a paste of BS and water to remove black scruff marks from linoleum floors.

*Safely remove crayon marks on a blackboard with the same paste.

*Neutralize odors in a kitchen garbage can by sprinkling BS in the bottom of the can before you insert a plastic liner.

*Clean typewriter keys with a soft toothbrush with a solution and 4 tbs. of BS dissolved in 1 cup of water. Wipe with a tissue or paper towel.

*Wash your waterbed mattress with BS and water if the plastic protector has a musty odor.

*Sprinkle 1/2 cup BS in a gym bag at night. Vacuum out soda and odors in the morning.
