Psychologists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PSYETA)
recognize that animal abusers deserve not only jail time, but need
psychological counseling. Many states now realize this. The cruelty
statutes of California, Colorado, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Oregon,
Vermont, Virginia, and Washington authorize psychological counseling,
making it more likely that judges will recommend treatment.
PSYETA has developed the AniCare Model Treatment Program
for Animal Abusers. A cognitive behavioral model, AniCare "challenges
maladaptive attitudes and beliefs about animals, explores family
history, and educates clients about how social factors such as
pseudo-masculinity and anthropocentrism, may encourage the abuse of
animals." A mental health professional can use the AniCare treatment
model to help the abuser recognize and break the cycle of violence in
which animal abuse leads to violence directed against humans.
