The coat took 40 of them,
Raised to cover someone else’s back.
Not for them the dewy grass under their paws,
Sighting prey, the long chase,
The cold air, the brambles,
Morning sun warming wet fur.
Their paws felt only cage wires,
Boxes too small to stretch in,
Smelling of three weeks worth of dung.
The end came, but not quickly enough.
