One little mockingbird;
Lonely as can be.
Calling to the birds outside,
Knowing they are free.
Poor little mockingbird,
How I wish I knew
That keeping you captive
Was the kindest thing to do.
Dear little mockingbird,
How am I to know
That life would treat you kindly
If I were to let you go.
For life outside is beautiful,
But hard and cruel, too.
And here you're warm and safe and full,
Though there's no mate for you.
So try to make the best of things,
For here you now belong.
And I think sometimes you're happy
When I hear your little song.
God sees the little sparrow fall;
Perhaps t'was meant to be.
Once I found a mockingbird
That needed help from me.
