Bear Protection Act (H.R. 3029)
From Lynn Rogers - 25 Mar 2008

This sounds like something very worthwhile. As long as there is a market for bile, it will be a choice between getting it from bear farms or endangering wild populations--until people accept synthetic substitutes. This bill at least helps protect American populations and protects Asian populations to the extent that they would then not be killed to send gallbladders to the US.

Sue, is this something we could put on the bear.org website to reach the 400,000 people who visit the site each year? If we can get pictures and video to support it, we should make an exhibit on this major issue to reach the 35,000-50,000 people who will visit the North American Bear Center this summer. So many things to do and then having the DNR fighting against our efforts. Hard to know which direction to put energy for the most effective education. I suspect it would be too much of a stretch to try to fit the gallbladder issue into our BBC/Animal Planet documentary about bear conservation in their increasingly urbanized environment. I hope a lot of people contact their congressional representatives.
