Great to see you folks are covering stories about real people (two very brave grandmothers) putting themselves on the line to make positive changes in society. I am a strong proponent of sound science. However, the development and dissemination of genetically modified foods vigorously challenges soundness. In fact, it may be the single greatest long-term threat to our society--a ticking time-bomb of sorts.
ADULTERATED FOODS ON GROCERY SHELVES
THE DECATUR DAILY: Sunday, November 10, 2002
Congratulations to Gerry Coffey and Jean Tune for their recognition of the problem of adulterated foods in this country. And a big raspberry to the management of Decatur Kroger for calling the police to carry them away for trying to do something about it.
Monsanto and their ilk and corporate farms have gone into the genetic engineering of food-stuffs in a big way. When we buy food in a grocery store, we can't know whether the corn or apples or asparagus or pork we're eating has the genes from a bat's eye or a human toenail, or a sheep's intestine, or a raccoon's pancreas. Or maybe built-in pesticides. And the reason is that our federal government represents Monsanto and corporate farmers and food processors who refuse to label the stuff. (U.S. Senators) Shelby and Sessions and Cramerand the others are not our representatives. They represent the corporate sponsors who bought them by paying their election expenses. It is a rotten system the Congress refuses to change.
Attempts have been made to require genetically engineered foods to be labeled as such without success, because of the corrupt alliance between Congress and corporate America. Instead of our government doing this for us, people like Ms. Coffey and Ms. Tune have to attempt to get something done at the grass roots level, only to be carried away by the police as their thanks. Shame on Congress. Shame on Decatur Kroger.
