CHRISTIAN CHURCH MINISTRY
Directory of Vegetarian (Vegan) Pastors and Churches Who Are Animal Friendly
Throop Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, California welcomes all those who love all creatures of the earth, the sea, and sky.
Rev. Clyde Grubbs, the minister of Throop, was formerly a vice president of the Unitarian Universalists for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (UFETA) and has engaged in animal rights activity within the context of the Unitarian Universalist movement and in the wider movement as well.
Clyde follows a Cherokee Native American Spirituality that teaches that all animals are relatives and human kinds violation of our relation with these our fellow sentient beings is the source of brokenness. According to ancient legend, the animals tired of being trampled on and hunted without mercy responded by creating diseases for specific kinds of violations. The plants seeing what the animals had done and fearing that the humans would all perish, created cures for each disorder, but only if the humans listened closely to what the plants were saying about healing and reconciliation with the animals.
Clyde understands this ancient story to be metaphor for the origins of violence and brokenness with the healing powers of life and creation. Based on his commitment to this end, Clyde advocates a plant based diet and practices a vegetarian spirituality.
