Our Silence About Animal Abuse Promotes Abuse of Humans
Comments by Gregory Massey - 29 Aug 2003

I should start by stating that I probably differ from many in my perception of sin. I agree with James the Just, brother of Jesus, that one who does something out of ignorance, innocence, and no impure intent, does not sin. This does not mean that the action is necessarily good, or any less "bad" ...but they aren't sinning. However, those who choose to ignore the truth, blindly follow convention/majorities, and continue to act in discord with the truth; they do so in sin.

Ever since I was put ill at ease by the sight of our family cow; lying dead on the side of a hill, beneath a bloodied butcher; the abomination of killing for food was impressed on me. As a young boy, in a school field trip, I smelled the cold stench in the back of the supermarket, and turned from the ghastly carcass hanging from cold steel. Being 12 years old, I didnt even know what a "vegetarian" was, but I knew that eating dead flesh disguised as meat, was sick and wrong, and I have not willingly consumed it since.

Eating hamburgers, before this epiphany, was not sinful; while eating them afterwards would have been. This is how I percieve the "sin" issue.

Thanks for your time.

With love,

Gregory
