Our Silence About Animal Abuse Promotes Abuse of Humans
Comments by Robert Andrews - 27 Aug 2003
Dear Tev, Mike, Steve, and all,
For me, meat-eating would be a sin, if I chose to do it now. May I quote Gandhi (definitely a better "Christian" than I):
"If anybody said that I should die if I did not take beef-tea or mutton, even under medical advice, I would prefer death." (address, Nov. 20, 1931)
I agree. Eating meat is, in my opinion, objectively wrong, yet, for those who don't yet "know any better" can it be, subjectively, a sin? I don't think so, at least not at the time. Later, one may have to repent of sins that went unrecognized at the time they were committed.
I endure this regret, guilt, and repentance every day. When I did it, it wasn't a sin -- now, horrified, I must fall on my knees and pray for forgiveness and for the future opportunity to "set things right" with those I have wronged, whether cows, chickens, pigs, people, or the little dog I neglected out of indifference and selfishness.
Lord have mercy, and show us the sins we are unknowingly committing right now . . . .
Robert
