Our Silence About Animal Abuse Promotes Abuse of Humans
Comments by Stephen Kaufman - 24 Aug 2003

I want to second Frank's beautiful comments, again, and add a couple of points.

For many people, including myself, being an activist is part of how I deal with the horror. If I did nothing and merely reflected on the tragedy, I would despair.

To empathize with animals causes pain, and I sometimes wonder, "Would I rather not have this sensitivity." And the answer, after serious reflection, is always no. It may be painful, but it's also a gift, for several reasons.

First, it gives me greater truth and understanding, helping me live rightly and with integrity.

Secondly, I feel much more at peace with myself and the world around me knowing that, as best as I am able, I am a friend to the animals.

Finally, the work I do on animals' behalf gives me meaning and a sense of direction.

So many people in the West despair because they struggle so hard for things that don't really matter. Animal advocacy may often be a painful struggle, but I am convinced that it really matters.

And, Sierra, if you are anywhere near Minneapolis, that locale has the largest collection of enthusiastic Christian Vegetarian Association activists in the country! I can help you connect to them, if you want.

Many people don't want to know what happens to animals on factory farms, but for the handful who simply deny that there are problems, encourage them to view PETA's Meet Your Meat.

Steve
