Companion Vs. Other Animals
Comments by Sparrow R. Jones - 3 Aug 2007

Rabbits are not carnivores (though they will eat their babies if they are overcrowded or otherwise in a bad situation.) Cows (which can make good pets that love humans and follow them around much like dogs. We plan to have a pet cow/bull when we have land for her/him.) are complete herbivores, as are horses, goats, sheep, llamas, yaks (I want a pet yak but my husband hasn't been talked into it yet), etc.

We keep two fancy rats and, while they are omnivores, are happy to eat only vegan food. They are wonderful, loving, clever animals and we have provided a safe, enriched environment in which they don't have to live in cages. There are groups who "rescue" pet rats that have been abandoned or removed from their owner by the humane society. One of our two is a rescue rat.

Other pet animals that are vegetarian either by nature or naturally thrive on a vegetarian diet include: chinchillas (sweet, soft, delightful creatures that live a long time), mnay types of fish, guinea pigs, small rodents (mice, gerbils, hamsters), birds (some of the large parrots are very intelligent and a bird that was hand-fed as a baby is very loving to humans. But be careful where you buy birds because some were tragically trapped in the jungle and suffered cruelty on their way to the market, most dying in the process.)

In Christ, Sparrow

-- "Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?" -- Isaiah 58:6
