Yes, we do make the distinction, but that doesn't eliminate the driving force of the market for cheap animal products. Neither does it eliminate the cruelty involved in the entire animal agriculture business. Money makes humans cut a lot of corners, including the environmental problems you are talking about. Factory farms are also a major source of disease.
Also, sustainable farming of animals has not had a real impact on the industry, at least as far as the number of animals is concerned, and we still see a lot of cruelty involved on these farms and in slaughterhouses.
We have found that relatively few people change their lifestyle for reasons of health or the environment without a lot of compromising. However, compassion, and having our emotions shocked by the lack of it, does more to change people's lifestyle than anything else, and most of them remain vegans.
