Establishing the Rights of Animals in Law and Human Consciousness
Comments by Frank and Mary Hoffman - 25 Sep 2006

Dear Debbie:

Thank you very much for your detailed answer.

We think you misinterpreted what we wrote about rights vs. welfare. We’re not saying to end the welfare efforts, but to realize that they’re not going to solve the underlying problem. Since the animal rights and welfare movement began, there has continued to be an increase in the number of suffering animals every year.

We agree with your comments about the need for a compelling rights basis.

Animals need to have the legal right not to be used, exploited, or destroyed by humans.

We’re not saying that things are perfect in the world, today, but that humans are better with rights than they were before these rights were established in law. And that if animals get legal rights it will automatically improve the rights of humans, because people will beging to think differently about all life.

We deliberately left out any religious connections, as we’re trying to give animals legal rights through the secular legal system.

In the Love of the Lord,

Frank and Mary
