Fear of Dying
Comments by Dena Hunt - 13 Dec 2004

Sometimes I think we misinterpret feelings. I don't think I believe that people, generally, are afraid to die; they simply do not want to die. We are like all creatures, indeed, all creation, even insects and possibly vegetation--we have an instinct, a drive, to survive. That instinct is what motivates the drive to reproduce ourselves. Everything alive wants to live.

What we actually fear is pain. The people in the burning building are not fearing death; they are fearing the pain of the fire.

There are two basic premises in Girardian theory with which I disagree: that we mimic and that we are competitive. Some people do mimic and some people are competitive, perhaps all the time; maybe most (or all) some of the time.

Also, I don't accept the survival of self-esteem as a cause of fear of dying; rather, the loss of control is cause.
