King James states as such:

And the Lord smelled a sweet savor

Just as the expression The smell of victory or I smell trouble ahead.  I think there is a smell of repentance here.

Also, Savor in the Webster can be used as:

To exhibit a specified quality or characteristic <remarks that savored jealousy>.
