Horseback Riding and Animal Rights:
Can
They Ever Be in Harmony?
Comments by: Neville Fowler - 27 Feb 2002
Last year there was a proposal to introduce horse drawn carriages to the streets of Oxford in the UK. The city streets have been largely banned to motor vehicles but there are lots of buses. They thought the horses would be nice (and profitable) with all the tourists. There was a virulent campaign against it by AR people - I wrote a letter myself! - and a US study was cited that showed how many accidents and injuries occur to horses and people from this system where used in the US (it would have been a first for a British city). I am glad to say the proposal was defeated.
