In Reference to: Sad Tale of Baby Elephant
Jenny Moxham hit the nail on the head. There is nothing to celebrate when a calf is born into zoo captivity. Zoo industry statistics show that Dokkoon’s baby will likely die decades before her natural lifespan. Sadly, this animal who is genetically wired to travel great distances and have complex family and social relationships will suffer from deprivation every day of her life.
No scientific study has ever confirmed the zoo industry’s message that elephants are conservation ambassadors to educate visitors. In fact, The Association of Zoos and Aquariums in the United States did a study which showed people stare at an elephant for only 99 seconds and only 10% of people said they learned anything after visiting the zoo.
