They Were Already Dead
Comments by Daniel - 16 Feb 2009

Dear Juli,

I agree that animals needs come first. I appreciate that!!! We are on the same side!!!

My issue is that hunters get let off the hook too easily. There is nothing ecological or animal-friendly about hunting. Ethical hunting, in my opinion, is some of the worst and most effective forms of green washing there is. It has gone virtually unchallenged.

Maybe, if an animal has a choice, who knows. I do know that on the animal end-hunting stresses the animal, animals have hyper-fear mechanisms, and I am so against "thanking the animal when you kill it" for the reasons you just mentioned, an animal does not feel blessed by a human taking its life, and it goes against its evolutionary nature to survive.

I know my position is controversial and unpopular and complicated. One needs to understand the conceptual framework behind it, to better understand where I am coming from. But I contend that there is something to it. It really comes down to a number of issues, which I spell out in my book, Creation Unveiled. You can find it at Amazon.com.

And, I do contend that as a Christian in particular, human-animal relationships do matter.

But, that's okay that you disagree with me, a lot of people would disagree with me on this subject. The most important thing to remember is that we both value animal-life and somehow see animal life as sacred. That is what is important!!!

It is just that my first exposure to animal issues was through the whole hunting for population control issue, and I saw a lot of injustice there. And, I saw how the environmental movement has coddled hunters, giving them a free ride. It is all about challenging an unchallenged position.

Thanks very much for taking the time to respond!

Sincerely,

Daniel Salomon, n/OEF
